Transport Facts

Need some help with including tangible facts and figures when writing your presentation or business case for sustainable travel and transport?

Information about modes of travel, and changes over time can be found at Energy Saving Trust

• In 1952 the principal mode of transport was by bus and coach with 92 billion passenger kilometres (42.2%) travelled
• Car and van use represented a little over one quarter of the total (58 billion passenger kilometres)
• A decade later, car and van use had tripled and accounted for 56.5% of total travel
• Since the 1960s, cars and vans have increasingly dominated UK travel
• Rail travel saw its share reduced from over 17% in 1952 to around 7% by 1972 due in part to the extensive closures of lines in the 1960s and 1970s which forced passengers into cars
• Rail travel has grown significantly in the last 10 years and its share is slowly increasing again
